Duties
Reporting to the Senior Manager of Habitat, Game and Fur, this position is responsible for the development, management and implementation of the habitat management program. The main goal of the habitat management program is to evaluate the potential impacts of development and land use on wildlife populations and habitats. The incumbent will lead and/or provide direction to habitat management staff in: the development of divisional recommendations for Provincial, Federal, and regional project submissions through the environmental assessment and land use referral processes; the evaluation of proposed project developments and land use proposals; ensuring that wildlife habitat management principles are incorporated within a land use review, legislative and policy development framework; both coordinating and evaluating divisional projects that may require an environmental assessment and/or integration into the Government referral process. The incumbent will ensure that sensitive wildlife areas are identified and will initiate the recognition of these areas through special designations including wildlife reserve proposals. The incumbent will keep abreast of developments in environmental assessments in other jurisdictions and evaluate their applicability to provincial situations where they are related to wildlife populations and habitat. The incumbent will work with other Wildlife Division program managers on the development of policy related to wildlife habitat in the province.
Qualifications
Extensive knowledge of wildlife and habitat management principles and practices; project planning experience; experience with the environmental assessment review process often within the context of potentially large socio-economic and political consequences; experience in conflict resolution, integrated resource planning; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Candidates must demonstrate strong organizational and well developed analytical and problem solving skills with an ability to perform in an independent complex, divergent and multi-stakeholder environment. The above qualifications would normally have been acquired and demonstrated through completion of a MSc program in Wildlife Management, Conservation Biology, Environmental Science or related field supplemented by related experience in those fields. Candidates with an undergraduate degree in the above noted fields who demonstrate considerable experience in the field of environmental assessment may be considered.
